What better place for a car free holiday than the Isle of Wight? With an extensive bus network, unique train line, a wide selection of coastal and footpaths crossing the island and much more, there are plenty of ways to get around and enjoy all that the island has to offer.
Getting Around
We’ve got an extensive travel by public transport page on our website, which provides all of the details you will need for your trip, but in summary, the main ports of Portsmouth and Southampton are well served by both train and bus services to the ports and then passenger ferry services to get over to the island.
Once on the island, there is a train line, Island Line from South Western Railway, which serves Ryde, Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin, as well as a connection at Smallbrook Junction for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. There is also Southern Vectis, the island’s bus network, which connects all corners of the island with bus stations in most major towns and a central station in Newport. Numbered routes operate all year whilst named routes, such as Summer Links, are summer only. There are also taxi services and a wide selection of footpaths and coastal paths to travel around on, with more on this later.
Visit Isle of Wight has produced a guide to getting to Shanklin.
Walking, Cycling and Electric Scooter
The island has a bit of a reputation for walking with the UK’s biggest walking festival, the Isle of Wight Walking Festival, taking place every year with headline Walk The Wight raising funds for local hospice, Mountbatten. So, as expected, we’ve got a network of paths to match this, with a 68 mile long coastal path and plenty of footpaths criss crossing the island.
Equally, there are plenty of locations across the island to cycle, including bridleways, revetments and routes, with lots of the old train line no longer in use converted for cycling and walking. Options include the Round The Island route and a selection of family friendly and other routes, all available from visitisleofwight.co.uk. All of our apartments have cycle parking available too and you are welcome to recharge removal e-bike batteries in your apartment via the standard sockets. For your cycling gear, we have washing machines and airers in all of our properties and for any repairs, we recommend Tav Cycles (01983 812989 tavcycles.co.uk).
In Shanklin and the surrounding area, you can ride the Red Squirrel Trail, which extends across the island and goes from Sandown through Shanklin to Wroxall, as well as pier to pier along the revetment to Sandown. For hiring, as well as Tav Cycles, you can visit routefifty7, who are located at Lower Hyde, perfect for travelling on the Red Squirrel Trail to Wroxall or travelling through Shanklin to reach the revetment to Sandown. They offer a range of bicycles and also electric bikes too. You can also hire from Wight Bike and Wight Cycle Hire.
You can find maps of all of the rights of way across the island on the following:
- Isle of Wight Council’s website as both a series of PDFs here as well as a full map here and current diversions here
- Wight Paths for an interactive map at wightpaths.co.uk
Visit Isle of Wight also offer maps for the key walking routes and cycling routes.
Alternatively, there are maps available to purchase locally and an OS map available in all of our apartments to borrow during your stay, as well as selected maps and routes.
Transporting Your Bicycle
The good news is that bringing a bicycle to the island is easy – all ferry routes support them. Here’s a summary for each company:
- Wightlink: If you are coming by FastCat, it is advisable to book your ticket in advance including your bicycle.
- Red Funnel: If using the car ferry, you need to board via the lower car desk (E), check in and wait in the designated area. For the Red Jet, racks are available on Red Jets 6 and 7 on a first come, first serve basis.
- Hovertravel: Bicycles are allowed at all times other than morning peak (6.30am and 7.30am Monday to Friday, 8.30am Saturday). It is also first come, first serve and they will be stored in the luggage area.
Island Line trains allow 4 bicycles per train on a first come, first serve basis.
Bicycles aren’t permitted on Southern Vectis buses generally due to mud and trip hazard but this is at the sole discretion of the driver.
Slow Wight Travel Guide
Visit Isle of Wight is supporting car free travel and holidays for visitors to the Isle of Wight with the Slow Wight Travel Guide, which is a fantastic guide with eight routes across the island that can be accessed by foot, bicycle, train or bicycle and provide the opportunity to browse the island and see many of the best attractions.
